Improper water temperature is a significant factor in the proliferation of legionella bacteria. These bacteria thrive in water temperatures ranging from 20 to 45°C, especially when nutrients like scale, rust, sludge, or algae are present. A common control strategy is to maintain cold water below 20°C. Hot water should be stored above 60°C and distributed at temperatures exceeding 50°C.
This thermometer kit is designed to monitor the temperature of both stagnant water and the surfaces of pipes and tanks within the water system.
The immersion probe should be submerged in water to a depth of at least 25mm; the ribbon surface probe is suitable for measuring the temperature of pipes and tanks, and the wire probe is ideal for accessing hard-to-reach areas or where other probes are unsuitable. This kit comes with a traceable calibration certificate.
Current regulations require that if you are an employer or person responsible for premises, you must conduct a risk assessment. The updated Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) from the Government's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) broadens its guidance on controlling legionella bacteria in water systems.
The code now covers all workplace hot and cold water systems, regardless of capacity, meaning the previous exclusion for systems under 300 litres no longer applies. While domestic systems may pose a risk, the code specifically addresses risks arising from work activities.
This implies that all employers managing premises with hot/cold water systems and/or wet cooling systems have a legal obligation to identify and mitigate any risk of contamination.
