These BD Vacutainer® plasma tubes, designed for clinical chemistry, contain lithium heparin additives that are spray-dried. Heparin functions as an anticoagulant by forming a complex with antithrombin III, which inhibits thrombin and activated factor X, thereby preventing blood clotting.

Optimal anticoagulation in these tubes is achieved with 17 IU of pharmaceutical-grade heparin per mL of blood. The lithium heparin is spray-dried onto the inner walls of the BD Vacutainer® tubes to ensure maximum solubility. For clinical chemistry applications, lithium heparin is typically favored over sodium heparin.

Tube mixing - To prevent micro-clotting, mix the BD Vacutainer® Heparin tube by inverting it 8-10 times immediately after collecting the blood sample.

Centrifugation conditions - ≤ 1300 g for 10 minutes at 18-25°C
