Choose from three distinct models: Braithwaite, Cobbett, and Watson. These Stainless Steel Handles are designed for use with the sterile 158mm Skin Graft Blades, ideal for harvesting "Macro" or "Major" Skin Grafts. Each handle features an adjustable guard to control the maximum thickness of the graft, tailored to the skin characteristics at the donor site, which can vary due to factors like the patient's age.
The precise thickness of the graft is influenced by:
1) The angle of contact between the blade and skin during harvesting;
2) The pressure exerted by the user on the handle during the procedure.
Mastering these elements is crucial for consistently obtaining high-quality split thickness skin grafts.
The Braithwaite Handle, developed by Fenton Braithwaite in 1955, improved upon the Humby and Bodenham Knives by allowing blade replacement without disassembly. Adjustments between the roller and blade are made using two knurled collars on the handle's back. The stainless steel blade is securely held in a leaf spring holder. To replace the blade, the safety catch is moved to open the leaf, allowing the blade to be inserted under the roller before reengaging the safety catch. When cutting thin split skin grafts, skin may roll around the guard, but this can be managed by applying traction to the cut skin to prevent tearing. The roller must move freely, requiring loose end-bearings, which can affect precision and cause the graft to thicken as the handle moves. Adjustments at both ends of the handle are needed to set the cutting depth, and unequal settings may result in a thicker graft on one side.
