The Critical Injury Pack was introduced with the revised British Standard for Workplace First Aid - BS 8599-1:2019. It is designed to complement standard first aid kits and is intended for environments where there is a significant risk of severe traumatic injuries. This includes work involving hazardous machinery, cutting tools, power equipment, or exotic animals. Critical Injury Packs are recommended for various sectors, such as agriculture, forestry, construction, woodworking, and glass cutting.

Beyond the risks associated with the work itself, employers might consider maintaining adequate quantities of Critical Injury Packs to address injuries to employees or the public resulting from criminal activities, terrorism, or mass casualty incidents. Suitable locations could include sports arenas, train stations, shopping centers, airports, event venues, and festivals.

Critical injury packs are designed to address severe, life-threatening bleeding from knife wounds, gunshots, blast injuries, amputations, severe lacerations, and more. They contain haemostatic dressings that promote blood clotting independently of the body's natural mechanisms and have been proven in military settings to stop severe bleeding faster than standard dressings and pressure alone, along with SAM XT tourniquets to control otherwise uncontrollable limb bleeding. These packs are intended to be used alongside, rather than as a replacement for, standard first aid kits.
