Choose from three distinct models: Braithwaite, Cobbett, and Watson. These Stainless Steel Handles are designed for use with sterile 158mm Skin Graft Blades to facilitate the harvesting of "Macro" or "Major" Skin Grafts. Each handle features an adjustable guard that controls the maximum thickness of the graft, tailored to the skin characteristics at the donor site, which can vary due to factors such as the patient's age.
The precise thickness of the graft is influenced by:
1) The angle of contact between the blade and skin during harvesting;
2) The pressure exerted by the operator on the handle during the procedure.
Mastering these elements is crucial for consistently achieving high-quality split thickness skin grafts.
The Watson Handle, developed by John Watson in 1960, addresses several challenges with its fixed, polished stainless steel guard and straightforward, rigid thickness adjustment. The rod remains stationary, without sliding or rotating, during grafting. It passes eccentrically through the end-bearings, allowing depth adjustment via a single knurled control knob, while maintaining parallel alignment with the blade settings. The precision fit of the bearings eliminates any "play" during use. Although the rod's spontaneous rotation is minimal, a locking lever is included to prevent accidental changes to the setting. The fixed guard minimizes skin rolling but introduces significant "drag" as it cannot move with the skin surface, potentially causing ragged edges on both the graft and donor site, which can be partially mitigated by using liquid paraffin for lubrication.
